Karen Vieira is a Brazilian multimedia and visual artist based in Berlin.
Her research focuses on the patriarchal and capitalistic constraints imposed on the female bodies, exploring her practice through textile, graphic design, photography, poetry, film, and clay.
Interlacing the fabric of society’s burdens by creating a dialogue between social reproduction, time, and control, Karen unravels the stitches and weights woven into women’s bodies
EGGS AND ODDS
Her recent work, ‘Eggs and Odds’, carves layers of texture and tight knots through punch needles, reflecting how female bodies are commodified, politicized, and restrained under the guise of choice. Each thread is woven into existence, standing against a system that measures the worth of women by their biological clocks.
Where do the boundaries of our choices begin and end? How can we redefine the collective practice and perception of what ‘fertility’ means? Freezing eggs, or 'Social Freezing' as medical doctors refer to, once thought to be a personal, empowering choice, emerges as a political act linked to dynamics that prioritize productivity and accumulation over human needs. Ironically, the human egg cell is the largest cell in the body, visible without a microscope, yet access to reproductive control remains invisible and inaccessible to most women, hidden behind economic and systemic barriers.
Karen's vivid work explores how capitalism not only controls women’s bodies but also dictates the very conditions under which life itself is reproduced.
Threatening threads of autonomy and oppression, where the production of goods and services is inseparable from the production of life and labor, invites us to look beyond the surface of individual experience and confront the systemic forces that shape it.
